Games For Learning? I’ve Got An App For That!

Have I mentioned that I love educational apps that are games? As a speech pathologist, mom, certified teacher and short lived homeschooler, I am always looking for great apps that are super fun to play and teach something. Sometimes these apps are played independently. Sometimes they are played with others.
One of my long term patients has autism and a speech/language delay. She is in general ed classes and is doing well but she needs to work on organizing her thoughts, following directions and asking for specific help. She and I love playing games on the iPad together. I look for age appropriate games that have “cheats” online. One example is “The Mystery At Blackthorn Castle” Blackthorn Castle by Lone Wolf Games, LLC Here are the cheats:
As we play the game, if the patient gets stuck, we go to the cheats. She then reads the cheats aloud and we work through them. This has been great for her problem solving skills as well as increasing her ability to work cooperatively. We also get in oral reading and reading comprehension work.
Playing game apps as a therapy activity is a great way to add some fun to your therapy sessions. It is also a great activity for parents and children to do together.
